ISSUES IN POLITICAL GLOBALISATION

by Peter Sloman of Lancaster Royal Grammar School

The following is an outline of themes which I plan to present to the middle school group for discussion: (These will also be discussed during European Week at LRGS in 2004)

1. What is Globalisation?
- trade liberalisation and the global market
- increased tendency for corporations to work on an international basis
- increased supranational decision making and growing importance of international political bodies (UN, EU, NATO etc.)
- international coordination of political ideas (e.g. transatlantic 'Third Way' summits)

2. What are the political issues involved?
- free trade, fair trade and the WTO
- threats to cultural identity (e.g. French anti-Americanism)
- multilateralism v. unilateralism in foreign policy
- does the EU further or hinder globalisation?

3. Historical and Economic Perspective
- movement towards global government (League of Nations, UN etc.)
- trade liberalisation trends
- globalisation and the end of colonialism

Latest indications suggest that the meeting is likely to take place in the summer term.
Thank you.
Peter Sloman
