Art and life in the 'Portrait of Dorian Gray'
We all know thatart draws on life, but what happens when they swirch places? What happens ehwn apainting replaces life?
The evil portrait of Dorian Gray realtes in a strange way with Dorian and Basil. The cretor of the painting has managed to capture the essence of Dorian in the painting and through an oddd substitution, art ,that is the portrait, replaces life.
So, such a sacred thing like art descends in the area of the profane. As a result the portrait becomes more hideous every day and in the end asks for human sacrifices. The first to die is Basil-its creator. He managed to embrace the perspective of of art while Dorian did exactly the opposite. He overestimates life and places it to a much higher level than it actually is.
As the painting changes its appearance ,Dorian changes his mentality and his way of understanding life.He wants to be remarked due to something special. But ,in fact,if he had meditated over his life and his paiting for only a moment,he would have realised that art had much more to offer than life, was much more filled with essence
Dorian is aware that the switch has happened and he hides the painting. He relises that the portrait is his real "ego".But he doesn`t realise that he lives from the point of view of the portrait. He becomes capable of outragious acts.
Art itself is immortal. It doesn`t have an end ,a beginning, but if it replaces life ,it also takes over its atributes,it becomes vulnerable to time.
But this switch also requires the life ofd a human-the life of Dorian. This is yhe supreme sacrifice. The life that dared to take the place of art has to be sacrificed.
That is why the paiting remains intact, art gets back its immortality and life ends ,becoming again as it was...
