Brebu Architectural Complex

The age of Brebu, a locality on the Doftana Valley, a few kilometers away from Campina, in Prahova county, as mentioned by well-known documents, is over 400 years; the oldest act was issued by Peter the Young on the 8th of October 1564.
Brebu's strategic location at a height above the horizon, its defence and the possibility of retreat in the mountains, caught the attention of Matei Basarab (1632-1654) who decided to build a fortified building on these surroundings. So on the 27th June 1650 he started the construction of the church, which was continued by Constantin Brancoveanu, beginning from 1689.
Brebu Architectural Complex is one of the most representative achievements from the 17th century because it is formed of a princely house, a church, a surrounding wall and a belfry tower. The historical Complex from Brebu is similar to the Brancovenian palaces. The surrounding walls were also defence walls.
Throughout the centuries, the Complex had more functions; since 1971 the princely house has sheltered the History Museum from Matei Basarab-Constantin Brancoveanu epoch. In the beautiful garden, in front of the house, there are the stone busts of the two founders. The busts were made by Gheorge Coman.
The Complex was restored several times (in 1843, 1957-1959).
The Brebu Architectural Complex is one of the most important monuments founded by Matei Basarab and perfected by Constantin Brancoveanu and it represents a significant attainment of 17th century architecture.
