Impressions on the European Week (2)
Although I was a part of the Comenius project last year as well (when I hosted a Polish girl), I found out we still have a lot to learn from our friends in other countries.
When I first came in contact with this project, I was afraid I wouldn't fit in. That was not the case, but one would expect that this year I shouldn't have had any worries at all. Which, of course, didn't happen. Both me and Daniel were concerned about how to react, what to say, what to do… We were lucky to meet a group of wonderful people and, once again, this experience made us realize that we're all basically the same.
On our first day we were free to do whatever we wanted to, so John (my host) introduced me to some of his friends. It was a little unusual to finally meet the people I had heard so much about, but in the end everything was ok.
Then on Monday I met all the others participating in the European Week. We were supposed to play
games (the Icebreakers) like throwing balls at each
other, making funny sounds, climb on the chairs and
tables and so on. This might sound silly to anyone
who hasn't seen it happen, but it was fun and helped
us get to know one another. We took the tour of
Lancaster and Daniel and myself even asked
the mayor (!!!) to have her picture taken with us.
Perhaps the greatest day of the week was the one when we went to Borwick Hall for orienteering. Although we were all wet and dirty by the end of the day because of "playing" in the canal, building towers out of milk crates and jumping off wobbling poles, everyone enjoyed it and no-one was left out. Even Mr. Georgescu, our teacher, and Mr. Prescott, the director of music at Lancaster Royal Grammar School, got into the act!
Finally, on our last day we had to do a PowerPoint presentation of the European Week in Lancaster and then show it in to some of the other students in school. It was quite scary, but all's well that ends well. I don't know if I will be allowed to be a part of this project next year, but I certainly hope so.
