Impressions on the European Week (1)
Visiting Germany was a great experience for me and a big opportunity to meet people from different countries, to learn about their culture and the most important thing to make new friends. I was excited about the idea of spending a whole week in a quiet little town of Germany, called Rendsburg, hosted by a German girl.
Saturday, on the 29th of March, my colleagues our teacher and me arrived in Hamburg at about 9 in the evening. My host's mother and my host came to pick us up from the airport. She seemed really nice and friendly. As our delegation was the last that arrived we didn't meet the others until the next day. I started talking with Janne, my host, and her family and I was impressed that they knew a lot of things about Romania. They were pleased with the presents I had brought them, especially with the brandy which they found really tasty.
The next day we went on a city tour with all the students taking part in the project. I discovered that the Finnish pupils, actually a boy and a girl, are extremely friendly and that the French are not so talkative as I thought. I have also noticed that English boys are very open-minded and that the Polish girls seemed very quiet, but that was just my first impression. We walked along Rendsburg and admired the views. It was a good way to talk to each other and find out more about all pupils. It would have been an extremely pleasant tour if the weather hadn't been so ugly. It was extremely cold, the wind was blowing, and I certainly wasn't dressed for such a weather.
On Monday we visited the school and entered a few classes. We started presenting our projects and it was a great opportunity to find out more about each other's country and customs. We also began working in groups on different subjects: attitudes on war, lifestyles, how to behave in a foreign country, specific food for each country, philosophies on life.
Wednesday seemed to be the most exciting day of the week because we had a trip to Hamburg. We visited the City Hall and went on a city tour along water, with a boat. It was an incredible day. In the evening we went to cinema, a special one because it was a snick preview and we didn't know which movie we are going to see.
On Thursday we went bowling and had a lot of fun. It was amazing that, even though we came from different countries, each one with specific features and culture, we had a great time together and discovered that we have a lot in common.
All in all, I enjoyed a lot that week. Rendsburg is a beautiful city, with friendly people, with a rich culture and with magnificent views. I left with a lot of nice memories, many photos, some new e-mail addresses and with the hope that one day we will meet again.
