SPORT : TO HELP YOUNG PEOPLE INTEGRATE

In a lot of towns in France, sport has known two major revolutions in the last few years. On the one hand it has often been a way of integrating young people particularly in difficult districts. On the other hand it is practiced in the street  :that’s why it’s called “street sport”. These 2 tendencies complement one another and associations try to supervise young people and to organize sporting facilities.

This idea of using sport to occupy young people in suburbS dates back to the 80s. It was initiated   by a governmental will. In 1992 and 1993, the state gave 8 billion ‘francs’ to build 1560 proximity facilities. The principle is to build basketball grounds and skateboard parks in front of council flats. All these facilities are built to let young people who can’t afford joining a sports club play a sport they want. And it is especially meant to avoid inactivity or idleness which can lead to delinquency.
