The word jeans  comes from a kind of material that was made in Europe. We are not sure of the meaning of denim but it might come from France.

At the beginning of the 18th century, jean cloth was made from a mixture of things. But later, jean cloth was completely in cotton. At first, it was workers who wore it because this materail was very strong.

Next, in the 19th century, during the California Gold Rush, the gold miners wanted clothes that were strong and did not tear easily. In 1853, Leob Strauss started a wholesale business of jeans and afterwards, Strauss changed his name from Leob to Levi.

The jeans became very popular in the 1930’s.

Indeed, at the time, they were lots of western movies which became very popular and in which cowboys often wore jeans.

During the time of the World War 2, American soldiers introduced jeans called waist overalls. Wrangler and Lee began te be rival companies of Levi.

In the 1950’s, denim was the symbol of the teenage rebel in TV movies. In some schools in the USA,students were banned because they wore denim.

In the 1960’s, different styles of jeans (embroidered jeans, painted jeans, psychedelic jeans,…) were worn by university and college students.

In the 1970’s, jeans started to be made more and more in sweatshops and they became cheaper. More people started wearing jeans.

In the 1980’s, jeans were sold more and more. However in the world-wide recession of the 1990’s, the sale of jeans stopped growing.

Nowadays, a growing number of people of all ages , male and female alike, wear jeans regularly.

Indeed, in a mall, we can notice that about 65 per cent of people are wearing jeans, the majority being young people.
