French
great predators: endangered species |
There are, in the Comenius project, very different
countries when we come to think of big predators. Romania, for example, still
has a lot of bears, wolves and lynx contrary to England that does not have any.
In
France it is different. The French authorities try to keep those magnificent
animals. Lynx were reintroduced 30 years ago in the Vosges. And, since then
their population has increased. They are now about 200 living in the Vosges,
Jura, the Alps and they are beginning to invade our forests. The reintroduction
has worked.
Our
wolves are coming from Italy and they have been back in France for the last 10
years. However, because they are carnivorous, the shepherds ,anxious for their
flocks of sheep, do not agree with their return. Consequently, the wolf
population is increasing slowly. We actually count about 50 of them in the Alps.
The
French bears were reintroduced in the Pyrénées a few years ago. Nonetheless,
the majority of them died and they are currently less than 10, which is
not a population important enough for their survival.
Those
3 predators which are the only big carnivores living in our climate are similar
since they are mammals, carnivores and predators but they also are the biggest
and more dangerous animals we have (even if they represent a ridiculous danger icompared
to guns). These particularities do not help them: humans want to be the greatest
so they kill all their potential adversaries.
Now
that you know about French great predators, join us in the hope of their
well-being and survival.
