The
"Pyramide du Louvre"
I have chosen to write about a symbolic monument in France : the Pyramide du
Louvre . I will explain my reasons for this choice in the conclusion. In the context of
the Comenius project : we (all the students of my class) have to choose a monument or a
work that would best epitomize France. Due to this fact I would rather tell you about the
?Pyramide du Louvre?.
To introduce the description of the pyramid itself, I will, not only, write a
very short biography of the architect?s life, but also, I will describe his style of
working.
Ieoh Ming Pei (that is
his name) was born in Canton, China in 1917. He left China when he was eighteen in order
to study architecture in MIT and Harvard.
Due to his reliance on abstract forms and materials such as stone, concrete,
glass, and 'steel, Pei has been considered as a disciple of Walter Gropius. However, Pei
shows little concern about theory.
On the one hand, many
of his designs result from original design concept, and on the other hand, he frequently
works on large scales, but also, he is renowned for his sharp, geometric designs.
As far as the pyramids description is concerned , I will do it to you. The
pyramid has, on the one hand, a height of 21.65 m, and on the other hand, it has also a
square base with each side
that measures 30 m. Moreover, it is composed with 593 diamonds and triangles
in glass. On the one hand, its framework is made of aluminium, and on the other hand, its
weight is : 95 tones due to its girders, but also, its knots, all made in stainless steel.
The Pyramide du Louvre is situated just in front of the museum
Le Louvre . This building holds a faction of entrance. As a matter of fact
the pyramid is like a light well in order to illuminate the access hall.
To conclude, I will write why I make this choice. I have chosen the Pyramide du Louvre owing to the fact that for me it is a real symbol of France. Due to its modern architecture which shows how France can council modernity and old-fashion. On account of the fact, on the one hand, the architect is Chinese, and on the other hand, the fact that the architecture of the pyramid is completely different from French architecture, it shows that France is totally open to foreign culture.
