Marianne, by Delacroix

marianne.jpg (3760 octets)

The document under consideration is a painting by Eugène Delacroix who is a famous French painter .

The painter aimed at showing the importance that Marianne has, insofar as not only is

she in the middle of the painting but also her head is in the clouds.

Furthermore, the sky looks very dark and it is only above her head that we come across

a very good weather with both white clouds and a blue sky.

We are led on the right track as to think that Marianne is a symbolic person owing to the fact that she appears like a goodness so that the sky might follow her.

We are led to reckon that she wears a red Phrygian cap which, on top of that , reflects the idea of freedom .

Into the bargain, she has a cockerel on her shoulder. This is reminiscent of the fact that

the cockerel stands for France too.

For all I know Marianne wears the typical clothes that peasant women wore in the 18 th century.

We are led to suppose that Marianne epitomises here the working-class due to the fact that her clothes seem to be worn and dirty.

As far as she is concerned, we are tend to think that she recalls people's daughters, in

as much as she wears the same clothes and she seems to be working. What is more, the painter drew a sharp contrast between her determination, insofar as she has her hand on her hip on the one hand, and her serenity owing to the fact that her face is illuminated

and she looks somewhere else on the other hand.

At that time people were revolutionary and in my opinion she also represents this aspect since she gets the French flag around her waist.

Delacroix aimed at illustrating her fighting spirit for France but also and certainly for French people.

To my mind I think that Marianne epitomises best France. Firstly, she is not only the daughter of the Revolution but also of freedom.

In the ancient Rome slaves were considered free if we gave them a Phrygian cap. We are led to guess that it is the origins of the symbol of freedom.

That's why Marianne was considered as the idea of univers.

Similarly, Marianne gets two faces.

On the one hand she stands for legality and on the other hand she is fighting.

I allude to two quotations which underline these ideas that Marianne is " the freedom who leads people to the barricades" and centuries ago people said that Il her mother was the Republic".

Second I y Marianne was called after a song by Guillaume Lavabre which was titled "La Garisou de Mariano".

In addition to that, she was also called the virgin Mary insofar as we can break Marianne down into "mari-anne".

There was also fashionable origin owing to the tact that in the Massif Central, it was a very famous firstname.

Next, the most important is that Marianne appeared after the French Revolution in 1789. Finally, I have also chosen Marianne owing to the tact she is still here in the French patrimony.

Not only do we come across statues of Marianne in the cities but also we meet her bust

in al the French town-alls.

When we receive postcards we have often looked at her on the stamp since January the 1st 1849.(date of the first stamp with Marianne on it)
